How to Incorporate Movement Into Your Day (Even When You’re Busy)
The kids are back in school and summer is officially over – which probably means work is picking up, you’re busy with after-school sports, and weekends are spent catching up on errands. So when are you supposed to get that workout in?! Incorporating movement into your day is important, not just for your physical health but mental health as well.
Why Incorporating Movement Into Your Day Matters
Even 30 minutes a day can have big benefits, including:
For Your Health
Regular movement helps reduce stress, improves your cardiovascular (heart) health, and helps you maintain your overall strength and flexibility.
For Mental Clarity
If you’re feeling stressed about how much work you have to do, but find yourself staring at your screen being unproductive, it’s time to get up and go get some movement in. Exercise has been proven to boost mood and energy levels – which of course helps you stay focused and accomplish more throughout the day.
For Consistency
Short, 30-minute blasts of movement each day makes it easier to maintain consistency and ultimately achieve your long-term goals.
Getting in Your 30 Minutes of Movement Daily
Moving every day can seem daunting, especially if you haven’t been exercising regularly before now. But tackling a goal of just 30 minutes is a lot easier than finding time for a full body gym workout, or getting out for a long run. Once you get started, you’ll likely find that 30 minutes goes by faster than you expected it to! If you’re still unsure, here are some tips for getting in those 30-minutes of movement every day.
Break it into Chunks
30 minutes daily doesn’t have to mean 30 minutes at once! Try setting an alarm and moving for 5 minutes every hour, or going for three 10-minute walks throughout the day.
Make it Part of Your Morning Routine
As the day goes on, it gets easier and easier to decide not to get your 30-minutes of movement in. By adding your 30 minutes of movement into your morning routine (whether it’s a dog walk, short yoga session, or body weight exercise to get your blood flowing) you’re more likely to actually get it done and stay consistent.
Incorporate Movement into Your Daily Tasks
How do you commute to work? Can you walk or bike? Take the stairs instead of the elevator? Park further away? We’re all busy, but adding movement into your day and increasing your steps can help ensure you get in your 30 minutes.
Try a Mini-Workout
Try doing squats while the kids are doing their math homework, or use an online fitness app (or try out DEEM’s online coaching!) and get in a quick 30-minute workout while dinner cooks. Again, it doesn’t always have to be all or nothing when it comes to getting in your movement. A 30 minute workout at home is better than no workout!
Head Outside With the Family
If you know DEEM’s founder, Mikkie, you know that along with her love of the gym and the benefits she reaps from weight training, she loves getting outside for an adventure. Whether it’s a hike, a dog walk, a family bike ride, playing with your kids at the park, or a longer adventure (canoeing, anyone?) there’s nothing like getting in your exercise and fresh air at the same time.
