Physical Activity and Mental Health

The Connection Between Physical Activity and Mental Health

When we perform any sort of physical activity, we’re not just benefitting our bodies – we’re boosting our mental health too. We’ve all experienced the sense of accomplishment and enlightenment that follows after hitting a good workout or going on a walk outside. We continue on with our day feeling better than before – but why is that? What’s really going on behind the scenes to give us that deep sense of satisfaction?

The answer lies in our brain chemistry. Gaining a deeper understanding how physical activity affects the brain can drastically improve people’s lives. For those struggling with mental health challenges, exercise can serve as a powerful tool to help alleviate symptoms like anxiety, depression, and stress.

Understanding The Science

Our bodies naturally produce serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. These are the chemicals that reduce anxiety and improve overall sense of well-being. When we have low levels in these chemicals, it can lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety. Although, there is good news! We can actually boost these chemicals naturally through physical activity

Not only does exercise boost the production of these mood-enhancing hormones, but it also improves blood flow to the brain, reduces inflammation, and stimulates growth of new neurons. Combining these effects we can understand why we experience mental clarity and an overall sense of well-being after we exercise. This is why performing physical activity everyday has a huge impact on mental health long term.

Why Mental Health Is Important To Us

Mental health affects everybody. From severe conditions to occasional negative thoughts, it’s important to bring it to light. Millions of people across the world deal with mental health challenges daily, and we here at DEEM want to show support towards mental health awareness. Many of our members come to us with the desire to prioritize their physical health, but often face mental obstacles when it comes to their fitness journey. We support our members every step of the way by providing motivation and encouragement, reassess their fitness plan when needed, and help build their confidence.

Supporting Physical Activity and Mental Health Beyond Our Facility – The Push-Up Challenge

About This Challenge

This February, DEEM Health + Fitness is joining the CMHA’s annual Push-Up Challenge.

It runs from February 11th-28th with the goal of raising awareness and funds for the mental health crisis going on worldwide. In 2024, they raised over $2.4 million with over 49,000 people participating. Contribution funds go towards mental health programs, services, and resources across Canada. You can either donate to your local CMHA branch or CMHA National.

Why DEEM Is Joining

One of the highlights our gym has to offer is that it’s very community based. With the different seasonal challenges or memberships we have going on, like our Biggest Loser Challenge or our Small Group Training sessions we offer, our members build connections with the staff and each other. With the CMHA’s Push-Up Challenge, we’re not just building physical strength – we’re building a community with a shared purpose. Participating in this event allows us to be part of something bigger. Not only does it give us a feeling of purpose and fulfillment, but we’re also making a difference.
